About this winery

Growing grapes sustainably has always been a top priority at Grgich Hills. All vineyards are certified organic and farmed biodynamically. This agricultural philosophy treats the Earth as a living organism and uses homeopathic preparations, cosmic rhythms, and nature’s basic life forces to bring about balance between the grapevines and the Earth. Product notes

The 2013 vintage was nearly perfect, with consistent sunshine and moderate temperatures. After a wet start to winter in 2012, spring was warmer than usual, triggering an early budbreak and flowering and fruit set under sunny skies. With only one heat spike in late June/early July, Napa’s typical warm days and cool nights created wonderfully flavorful grapes. Harvest began about two weeks earlier than usual and never seemed to stop with grapes coming in at a steady pace.

Production notes

Zinfandel was co-fermented with a touch of Petite Sirah to add complexity and structure. The wine was aged in large oak casks so the flavors are well integrated but not overwhelmed by oak.

Tasting notes

This food-friendly Zinfandel’s fresh flavors of ripe blackberries, black cherries and a hint of pepper on the long finish is the perfect match for grilled meats with barbecue sauce, sausage pizza and hearty pastas.

March 2019

The 2014 Grgich Hills Estate Zinfandel is an impeccable wine. This wine is rich, yet shows a bit of the "claret" style that is not always present in the marketplace. Its aromas and flavors of blackberries, earth, and shading of oak should pair well with a roasted leg of lamb.

May 2018 (Vintage 2013)

Fresh and earthy, despite a complete embrace of ripeness, this complex red is lovely and memorable in a constructed blur of dried herb, wild strawberry and vanilla. The oak is integrated and supportive, helping to echo a delightful nuance of white pepper.

February 2013

From Grgich Hills’ vineyard in Calistoga, a northeast-facing hillside near Petrified Forest Road. This has zin’s sour plum scent along with tannins that feel polished, supple, sophisticated and cool. They build richness rather than fullness into the wine, their depths sparkling with mineral glints of light. This is a classical Napa Valley zin to pour with most anything meaty off the grill.

July 2022 (Vintage 2019)

Aromas of baked red fruit, hot stone and baking spice. Full-bodied with soft tannins. Juicy and nicely spiced.
