About this winery

Growing grapes sustainably has always been a top priority at Grgich Hills. All vineyards are certified organic and farmed biodynamically. This agricultural philosophy treats the Earth as a living organism and uses homeopathic preparations, cosmic rhythms, and nature’s basic life forces to bring about balance between the grapevines and the Earth. Product notes

All of our vineyards are certified organic and Biodynamic®. Mike Grgich’s home overlooks our vineyard north of Calistoga, where the gravelly loam provides excellent drainage and the cloudless days and cool nighttime temperatures are perfect for sun-loving Zinfandel. The vines are head pruned to protect the grapes from sunburn. This unique site and our natural farming create concentrated, complex flavors in the wine.

Production notes

This Zinfandel was co-fermented with a touch of Petite Sirah to add complexity and structure. It was then aged in large oak casks so the flavors were well integrated but not overwhelmed by oak.

Tasting notes

This food-friendly Zinfandel’s flavors of strawberries, licorice and a hint of white pepper make it the perfect match for grilled meats, Lasagna, pizza topped with tomato sauce and beef stews.

June 2020 (Vintage 2017)

The 2017 Grgich Hills Estate Zinfandel is sturdy and long on the palate. This wine explodes with persistent berries in its aromas and flavors. Enjoy its packed presence with well-seasoned pork kababs.

March 2019

The 2014 Grgich Hills Estate Zinfandel is an impeccable wine. This wine is rich, yet shows a bit of the "claret" style that is not always present in the marketplace. Its aromas and flavors of blackberries, earth, and shading of oak should pair well with a roasted leg of lamb.

May 2018 (Vintage 2013)

Fresh and earthy, despite a complete embrace of ripeness, this complex red is lovely and memorable in a constructed blur of dried herb, wild strawberry and vanilla. The oak is integrated and supportive, helping to echo a delightful nuance of white pepper.

February 2013

From Grgich Hills’ vineyard in Calistoga, a northeast-facing hillside near Petrified Forest Road. This has zin’s sour plum scent along with tannins that feel polished, supple, sophisticated and cool. They build richness rather than fullness into the wine, their depths sparkling with mineral glints of light. This is a classical Napa Valley zin to pour with most anything meaty off the grill.

July 2022 (Vintage 2019)

Aromas of baked red fruit, hot stone and baking spice. Full-bodied with soft tannins. Juicy and nicely spiced.
